While scheduling a newborn session is exciting, it's important to find the right photographer before getting too excited about portraits for your new little one. And no doubt any photographer you choose will provide you with lasting memories, you still want to take your time when making this important decision. So I'm sharing four things to consider when choosing a photographer to document your little one's first portraits.
1. Safety/Experience
This is by far the most important, as you'll want to choose a photographer who knows how to safely and comfortably pose your little one. A few questions to ask: how many years have you been in business, do you specialize in newborns, what safety/newborn courses or workshops have you taken, how do you create certain poses, do you have liability insurance. Meeting with potential photographers in person is also important, it allows you to decide if your personalities are a good match.
2. Style
Photographers are not created equal...they all do things differently, so you want to ensure the photographer you choose is going to produce the types of portraits you envision. Your personality more than likely determines which photographic style appeals to you the most...lifestyle versus posed, bold & colorful versus neutrals, prop/themed versus simple and classic. Make sure you spend time going through the galleries of the photographers you have in mind to decide if their style is a good match. Because you can't assume that a photographer will change their style to fit your tastes and needs.
3. Product Options
What do you want at the end of your session? Are you looking for digitals from an online gallery, left to figure out what to do with those images on your own? Or are you looking for a full service experience, from help with wardrobe to coordinating the session to a specific area in your home so that it is essentially designed for the space. A full service photographer will ensure you have beautiful tangible products to enojoy for years to come.
4. Budget
There's a reason I saved this for last. Although budget is definitely a consideration, it shouldn't be the only deciding factor. Utlimately you want to make sure you find a photographer that you can afford that meets all of your needs. Keep in mind that someone who specializes in newborn photography, has a licensed/insured business and provides a full service experience will cost more.
They're only little for so long, so once you find a photographer whose style you love, be sure to book your session as soon as you can, as many newborn photographers book months in advance. It's best to start looking for a newborn photographer in your second trimester so that you don't miss out on documenting this precious milestone for your little one.
